HAV Ship Management and HAV Bulk were established in 1999. The same year, HAV Bulk acquired M/V Baltica HAV and three other ships in quick succession. In 2002, HAV took control of its chartering function, HAV Chartering AS, and reorganized to fully integrated shipping company, HAV Shipping AS.
HAV Chartering began by operating HAV vessels on the spot market, but our fleet of sister ships soon resulted in contracts with larger charterers. This enabled the chartering team to take on both time- and bareboat-charters and to purchase additional ships.
Initially, HAV Ship Management (HSM) did technical management from Bergen, Norway, while crewing was managed from Kaliningrad, Russia. In 2005 the Kaliningrad office assumed responsibility for overall technical management and crewing.
In 2007 the HAV Group was approached by investors interested in short sea shipping. Although from southern Norway’s shipping hub, Kristiansand, they had little shipping competence and needed a partner that could manage their investment. HAV Bulk arranged for the purchase of two vessels, HAV Dolphin and HAV Marlin, and assumed overall project responsibility (negotiations, bank loans, management, operation, etc.) for the Skagerak Shipping (SS) project. HAV Bulk also took a 35% stake in the project. Skagerak Shipping subsequently purchased three of HAV Bulk’s vessels. Ewald Shipping AS was set up in a similar manner some years later. HAV Navigator AS was set up with partners in 2013 to take advantage of new opportunities.
In 2010 the HAV Group was approached by Oslo Bulk AS, which needed a management function for 10 new-builds it had under order. HAV provided Oslo Bulk with required management services as well as the competence. In 2013 this cooperation seized.
